Size: 70,000 square feet
Cost: $10M, estimated
Scope: Construction Means & Methods
With plan dimensions of approximately 350 feet by 200 feet, the excavation shoring design included provisions for a three-level subterranean parking structure. The shoring design involved steel soldier beams with three levels of tiebacks and wood lagging, some of which was specially designed to avoid underground utilities in adjacent Serra Street. In addition to soil pressures, the bulkhead was also designed for the surcharge loads from two future adjacent buildings. The project effort also included working with the drilling and general contractors to develop a support system for the excavator used to remove soil from the site, which is adjacent to the new graduate residences of campus’ Escondido Village.
